So, um, in my final year I had a part-time job in the finance office of a housing association. My job was to check the monthly rent arrears report before it went to the managers. One month the total was about four thousand pounds higher than the month before, but fewer tenants were in arrears, which, like, didn’t make sense. I went back to the spreadsheet and found a lookup formula had been copied down past the end of the data, so some tenants were counted twice. I checked it with my supervisor, fixed the formula, and added a check that compares the number of rows with the system’s export. Then I sent the corrected report, and, um, explained in the email which figures had changed.

STAR check

  • Covered: Situation“a part-time job in the finance office of a housing association”
  • Covered: Task“check the monthly rent arrears report before it went to the managers”
  • Covered: Action“went back to the spreadsheet… fixed the formula, and added a check”
  • Missing: Result“sent the corrected report” says what you did last, not what changed because of it.

Assessor’s view

Clear evidence of attention to detail: you noticed two figures that didn’t agree, traced the cause and fixed it, and you said what you did yourself. The evidence would be stronger with the outcome: did the managers use the corrected figures, and has your new check caught anything since?

What went well

  • A specific detail that shows how you noticed: the total went up while the number of tenants went down.
  • “I went back”, “I checked”, “I fixed”: it’s clear which part was yours.
  • You stopped it happening again, not just this once.

What to change

  1. Finish with the resultSay what changed because of what you did, in one sentence.
  2. Start without the fillerBegin with the situation straight away: “In my final year…”

A follow-up question they might ask

“How did you know your fix was right before you sent the report?”
